Today I’m sharing a new tie dye technique that I learnt recently – how to use soda ash!! For those of you who don’t know (I didn’t) soda ash is used to enhance the colors of any tie dye, which is amazing and I had no idea it even existed! Basically, you soak whatever fabric you’re going to dye in a soda ash solution, then you add the dye while it’s still wet. What you’re left with are extra vibrant colors on your tie dye creation!

I feel like I’ve become somewhat of a tie dye expert with all of the tie dye projects I’ve done – a dress, loungewear, men’s shirts, napkins, throw pillows, and a wall hanging! I’m pumped that I can add soda ash to my tie dye knowledge, it’s truly a tie dye hack!

I partnered with Tulip Color on this post and you guys already know how big of a fan I am of their tie dye kits, but now I am a new fan of their soda ash too! Alrighty, I think it’s time to get started!!

  1. Wear protective gloves while working with soda ash.
  2. Measure 8 cups of warm water into a large bowl.
  3. Add half a bag of Tulip Soda Ash into the bowl, then mix!
  4. Submerge your sweatshirt into the soda ash solution, making sure that it is completely covered.
  5. Let it sit in the soda ash for 30 minutes to an hour.
  6. Ring out your sweater, but do not rinse it.
  7. Add your dye directly onto the damp sweatshirt.

How to Tie Dye the Striped Sweater:

  1. Scrunch your sweatshirt up lengthwise, into a long snake.
  2. I made three stripes, and then the bottom one solid color, so you’ll need four elastics. Wrap each elastic around your shirt, making sure they are evenly spaced apart.
  3. Take your dye bottles and squirt one color onto each stripe, making sure to add color all the way around the shirt. I used, mint and coral, and orange, and then teal for the entire bottom section of the sweater.
  4. Wash and dry your sweatshirt, then you’re ready to rock it!
