3 DIY Tie Dye Throw Pillows

I saw a quote once that said “Throw pillows are the stuffed animals of grown women”. Hahaha, the truest thing I’ve ever read. My husband Brennan is always bugging me about how many throw pillows we have, but if you ask me, you just can’t have too many!! Which brings me to today’s DIY – turning a plain throw pillow cover into something amazing with dye!!

I made three different designs – shibori, a tie dye circle, and ombre, I made them all using Tulip Colors ‘hot dyes’ which are super easy to use, plus they come in a bunch of colors. You can check them out here! I decided to stick to two colors for my pillows, so that they would all coordinate, but you could of course choose as many colors as you’d like – or just stick to one!

I have really fallen in love with projects using dye, because it makes such a HUGE impact, but they are always SO quick and easy to make, which is a real win-win if you ask me! Tulip also has a ton of tie dye kits as well as their hot dyes, so make sure to check them out. This is my first project using hot dyes as opposed to tie dye, and the process is a little different, so we’ll get into that today, woohoo, let’s go!

PS. I have done a bunch of really fun tie dye projects like my loungewear set, napkins, mens shirts, and a wallhanging!

  1. Boil water in a kettle and pour it into a metal or glass bowl.
  2. Add a little of your dye powder at a time, mixing until you reach your desired color.
  3. Make sure to make your dye darker than you’d like because it will fade when you wash your pillow covers.

The Shibori Pillow:

  1. Accordion fold the pillow using about 3 inch folds.
  2. Accordion fold again the opposite way, so that you end up with a small square.
  3. Dip each edge of your little square into the pink dye.
  4. Let it sit for about 20 minutes before you unfold and wash it out.

  1. Pick up the cover from the center (like you would with tissue paper).
  2. Wrap elastics around the cover starting at the top and work your way down (Use three or four).
  3. Lightly spoon the pink dye onto the cover.
  4. Dip the end of the cover in yellow dye, making sure the dye reaches the bottom elastic.
  5. Let it sit for about 20 minutes before you unfold and wash it out.

  1. Roll your pillow cover up (like a sushi roll).
  2. Dip one end into the yellow dye (about 3 quarters of the cover).
  3. Dip the other end of the pillow cover into the pink dye (only about a sixth of the cover).
