DIY Friends Show Themed 90s Shoes

Tulip Color asked me to create a 90’s inspired DIY with their fabric markers and I immediately thought ‘FRIENDS’. I can’t be the only one who’s still sad that they took it off Netflix?! The 90’s are definitely already back with scrunchies, mom jeans and oversized tees, and I gotta tell you, I’m loving it! Which is why I was so excited to create friends themed shoes, because honestly all of my 90’s fashion inspiration comes from that show! The shoes I created have more of a ‘Phoebe’ vibe, but I had to add Joey’s signature line (how you doin?) on the back!

Ps. These DIY rainbow earrings would be so cute to wear with these shoes, especially if you made them the same colors!

Okay, so I gotta tell you about these Tulip fabric markers! First of all, they come in the cutest fabric case that you can color on with a leather strap and little pockets for all the markers! I was definitely bragging to my mom about it over Facetime the day I made these – ha! My husband even thought it was cool! They also work so well, and there are so many great colors. I now just want to color all of my clothes!

I’ll be honest, I was nervous that using these markers would look too ‘crafty’ and not polished, but I am so happy with how great these markers worked, and how fun these shoes turned out! Also, if you’re not into the show Friends (how?!), you could totally just do different colored stripes, and put a different saying on the back!

Anyways, we should probably get started. Also, I feel the need to tell you one more time how EASY this DIY was! I really thought it would be more difficult, but you could make these in under an hour!

DIRECTIONS:

  1. So, my husband, Brennan, suggested I draw out a few pattern options on paper before I draw on my shoes and that was the BEST idea! I picked a totally different pattern than I originally thought after seeing it on paper!
  2. Take your laces out.
  3. Stuff your shoes with socks so that you have a solid surface to draw on (also my husband’s idea… lol).
  4. I used blue, yellow and red markers to match the Friends logo, but you could totally get creative! Start drawing your lines onto your shoe! I did four strokes of my marker for each of my stripes to make sure they were all the same width! Continue with your pattern until you’re done!
  5. Sketch out your saying with a pencil on each heel
  6. Then, go over your pencil with the black fabric marker.
  7. I then added a colorful dot between each letter to look like the Friends font!
  8. Lace your shoes back up and you’re good to go!! I bar laced my shoes using this video tutorial!

Okay, now I need to know your favorite Friends character and episode! My fave character is hands down Chandler, and my fave episodes are ‘The One Where No One’s Ready’ and ‘The One with the Embryos’! Anyways, I hope you guys loved this DIY, I love how playful these shoes turned out and how dang easy they were to make!
