If you know me, you know that there are few things that make me happier than riding my bike. There are also not many things that bring me more joy than a pretty bike (especially if the basket is full of flowers). SO when ColorShot asked me to take an old, ugly bike that had been sitting in a garage for fifteen years (yes, fifteen) and give it a makeover to make it pretty again, I was excited but also a little skeptical.

Watch the Tutorial Video Below!

As someone who is constantly DIYing, I have done a lot of spray paint projects, and they always seen to chip right away, and also somehow always look uneven.  So, I wasn’t sure how spray paint would hold up on a bike, but oh, wow! ColorShot is SO much better than any spray paint I have use; like, night and day! It went on SO easily and has held up SO well! I am nothing but impressed!

How to Paint An Ombre Bike - A Bicycle Makeover - Before & After

I spent a day painting the bike with Brennan (my husband) and he sounded like a walking advertisement the whole time, haha. He was saying things like “wow, it really is a color shot, the color just shoots right out and it goes on so well!” Ha! Needless to say we loved the product!

Anyways, let’s talk about that ombre paint job! I was so dang nervous to attempt an ombre effect, but it was so, so easy! I also thought it would look like three separate colors, but the colors blended so well that it looks like a straight up gradient! The amount of times Bren and I raved about how great the ombre turned out is embarrassing! All that to say, don’t be intimidated by it, I’m going to teach you exactly how to achieve this dreamy look!

  1. Wipe down your bike with a damp cloth!
  2. Use your wrench and screwdriver to remove the tires and chain
  3. Use painters tape and plastic bags to cover the areas of the bike that you don’t want painted (or don’t want to be ombre).
  4. Put tape on the ground to mark the sections of your three different paint colors, so that it is evenly spaced.
  5. Start with your darkest color (I used Scuba) and spray paint the back section of the bike.
  6. Once you get to the end of that color, very lightly spray (by spraying from far away) the transition section.
  7. Take your next color (I used Mermaid) and lightly spray overtop of the part that you just lightly sprayed with your darker color. Spray lightly until it starts to blend.
  8. Spray the rest of that section and repeat this technique with your lightest color (Island Girl).
  9. I spray painted the handle bars white and then used the lightly spraying technique to fade the white into the teal and I love how it turned out!
  10. Spray your basket, bell, and any other accessories gold (I used First Million).
  11. Using your tools, put the wheels, chain, basket and bell back on your bike!
  12. ColorShot only needs 10 minutes to dry, so you can ride it right away – YAY!

PS. Since our bike was so old we replaced the seat and the wheels, this is of course optional, but really made our bike look brand new!

WOW! I cannot explain how thrilled I am with how this bike turned out, I can’t stop staring at it! If you have an old bike lying around, this is such a satisfying DIY that you can use for years to come! OR if you are looking for a new bike, but want a pretty bike without the high price tag, you can grab one off Facebook Marketplace! Then make it pretty with ColorShot spray paint!
