DIY Tie Dye Matching Lounge Set
GREAT NEWS: Tie dye is back, and it’s back BIG time! You’ve probably seen a lot of tie dye around lately, I’ve especially seen A LOT on Instagram, I also just got an email from Urban Outfitters about their tie dye collection haha! I gotta say, I’m here for it. I have so many fun memories tie dyeing as a kid, I remember tie dyeing basically my entire closet – even socks! It’s been awhile since I’ve tie dyed, and I really forgot how fun and easy it is!

I think with all of these tie dye trends I’ve been seeing, the thing I’ve seen the most – by a long shot is matching tie dye lounge sets! A lot of sweatshirts and hoodies and sweats and shorts, and they always match! I’ve gotta say, I love the look of them, so much so that I began hunting online looking for one, but I could just never find exactly what I wanted in the price range that I wanted. LUCKILY tie dyeing is so dang easy that I can easily make one myself! Plus they are the perfect quarantine outfit.
It’s so funny because Tulip Color asked me if I would do a tie dye project for them literally as I had a lounge set in my cart that I wanted to buy in order to tie dye! How crazy is that?! So, I obviously said YES and immediately bought a plain lounge set!
I used Tulips Pretty Pastels Tie Dye kit which I absolutely LOVE, I am in love with pastels, my life is basically made up of pastels, haha. Not only that, most of the tie dye sets I’ve been seeing have been in pastels! So it really is perfect! The set comes with five pretty colors, I used three colors on my lounge set, which I’ll get to below!
One more thing – I used the ‘crumple’ tie dye technique because it looks the most modern and trendy to me, it also happens to be the easiest technique – win, win! This entire project took like 30 minutes so.. brb off to tie dye everything I own 😉
Anyways let’s get started!!
SUPPLIES:
Light colored loungewear set
This is the sweater I used, and the shorts I used
DIRECTIONS:
- Lay out a garbage bag to protect your table!
- Start with your sweater, you literally just start crumpling and wrapping elastic bands (comes with the tie dye) around to keep it together. I just kept crumpling and wrapping elastic bands until I thought it was crumpled enough!
- I used three colors – lavender, blush and sky! Start with lavender, then blush, then sky and just start squirting it all over your sweater.
- Important to note: I made the mistake of diluting my blue color because I was worried that it would be too dark, but it ended up being too light. The dye looks SO much darker when you first put it on verses after you wash it! Don’t dilute your dye!
- Repeat with your shorts or sweats.
- Wrap separately in plastic wrap, and let sit for at least 8 hours. Rinse them out, then wash with a tablespoon of detergent and dry!
- You’re done and ready to look cute while lounging!

It’s so exciting pulling your outfit out of the dryer because you really have no idea what it’s going to look like! I FaceTime video called my family to show them once I tried it on, and my sister in law immediately went and ordered some Tulip tie dye, which is when I knew that it had turned out well – ha!
