DIY Love Letter & Mailman Couples Halloween Costume

Halloween is coming up quickly, and we’re probably all trying to figure out what we are going to dress up as. Now, I don’t know about you, but when I’m deciding what costume to make, I have a few criteria – creative, not too ‘out there’, and most importantly: EASY. I’m not the person who wants to spend days making an elaborate costume, but I DO still want it to be unique and cute. Enter this years costume: a DIY love letter & mailman costume!!

Oh and make sure to check out the costumes that I made last year!! My personal fave: In-n-Out Cups, but also: a family garden costume, a plant lady, and a hotdog family costume!!

Okay, so every year I LOVE seeing what everyone comes up with for their costumes, but my fave kinds of costumes are BY FAR couples and family costumes, they somehow always seem more unique, and WAY cuter! I also think that it makes it easier too – you don’t have to think of multiple ideas for everyone in the family – you just get one idea and add onto it!

The good news with this particular costume is that I’ve searched high and low to see if I could find any other mailman and love letter costumes out there on the internet, and I couldn’t find a SINGLE one. So, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll be the only one with that costume – we all know that it’s no fun to have the same costume as somebody else!

I should also mention that last year when I made my costumes I DIDN’T use fabric glue and it caused huge problems, haha. The hot glue didn’t hold on the fabric very well, the super glue burnt through the fabric, and we all know that tape never works. SO, I was very excited when Aleene’s Original Glue’s wanted to partner so that I could tell you all how much easier it makes Halloween costume crafting! But, seriously. Just use fabric glue guys.

Anyways, we should probably get to making this Halloween costume, but first let’s all admire how cute my dog Cooper looks as a little envelope 😉

For the Postcard:

  1. Cut out the postage stamp printable (get it below).
  2. Trace that printable onto felt & cut it out (white, pink and red).
  3. Glue the pieces together to make the postage stamp.
  4. Measure out 2 inch wide rectangles onto red and blue felt (approx. 6 inches long).
  5. Cut them out and lay them in a row at an angle at the bottom of your dress.
  6. Measure 4 inches up from the bottom of your dress and make a pencil mark on each stripe.
  7. Use those marks to draw a line across the pieces of felt.
  8. Trim the ends of the felt rectangles at an angle using the bottom of the dress as a guide. Then trim the other side using the pencil lines that you just drew. This will make the angled lines straight across the top and bottom.
  9. Glue the parallelogram-shaped stripes and postage stamp onto the dress.
  10. Rotate your dress 90 degrees. Use a ruler to draw three lines underneath your postage stamp using your fabric marker (for the address).
  11. Draw a vertical line in the center of your dress.
  12. Write an address on the three lines that you just drew.
  13. Write a message to the left of the vertical line.
  14. Cut out a rectangle, a triangle (same width as rectangle) and a heart to form a little envelope.
  15. Glue pieces together, then glue an elastic or headband to it so that you can wear it!
