3 DIY Men’s Tie Dye Shirts

Timing is a funny, funny thing. Brennan (my husband) had just asked me to order him a white shirt to tie dye because he was inspired my recent tie dye project and has NEVER tie dyed before *gasp*. How does one have a childhood without tie dye? I’ll never know. Anyways, I told him I would, but then I got an email from Tulip Color asking if I would create a men’s tie dye with my husband and he immediately said YES!

Now, I’ve got to tell you that I never anticipated what would happen next. Bren became hilariously addicted to tie dye. Once one of his tie dye shirts was finished he said “QUICK! Call someone!” because he was so excited to show someone his masterpiece… LOL. However, when we first started tie dyeing, he was so stressed because he’s a crazy perfectionist and hadn’t yet discovered how forgiving tie dye is. Even when you accidently get a color mixed with the wrong color, it somehow always turns out great (how does that work anyway?), so we ended up making him three men’s tie dye shirts because #cantstopwontstop.

I’ve worked with 2 minute Tie Dye before on my DIY plant pattern napkins, but I’ve got to tell you about it again because it’s just SO cool! If you’ve tie dyed before you know that the worst part is waiting 8 hours before you can see it! With 2 minute Tie Dye you just microwave it for 2 minutes, wash it, and it’s ready to go! So, if you’re busy like me, this is the way to go!

I think we made some pretty amazing tie dye shirts, so let’s get started and I’ll explain how we created each design!

SUPPLIES

White Long Sleeve Tee

White Short Sleeve Collared Shirt

Tulip 2 Minute Tie Dye Pack

DIRECTIONS

Striped Long Sleeve Tee

1. Scrunch your shirt up lengthwise, into a long snake.
2. We made three stripes, so you’ll need four elastics. Wrap each elastic around your shirt, making sure they are evenly spaced apart. *Brennan’s pro tip: use plastic wrap to cover the rest of your shirt to keep from accidentally dripping dye on the rest of shirt
3. Take your dye bottles and squirt one color onto each stripe, making sure to add color all the way around the shirt. We used blush, mint and coral. You may notice that our shirt actually has 5 colors, that’s because the coral color we used also made an orange and yellow stripe!
4. Place into the microwave using the container included with tie dye kit. We used a glass container to separate the dyed part from the white part of the shirt so that the dye didn’t leak to other parts of the shirt in the microwave.
5. Wash and dry your shirt, then you’re ready to rock it!

Crumpled Pink Collared Shirt

1. Crumple up your shirt (don’t overthink it)!
2. Wrap elastic bands around your shirt until it is all secure and crumpled.
3. Start adding dye all over your shirt – we used the blush color!
4. Throw it in the microwave, wash and dry.
5. You’re ready to wear your creation!

Half Crumpled Collared Shirt

Just combine the previous two techniques for this one!

1. Wrap an elastic band around your shirt, cutting it in half vertically.
2. Crumple one half of the shirt using elastics.
3. Add tie to the crimpled half of the shirt, being careful not to get dye on the other half (we used plastic wrap to keep from accidentally getting dye on the other side just don’t microwave the plastic wrap).
4. Put it in your microwave container, but leave the white part hanging out, so that it doesn’t get dye on it!
5. Wash, and dry! You’re ready to wear your super unique shirt!
